gipps2As part of the Commonwealth Government’s BITES (Basic It Enabling Skills) program, GippsTAFE is providing training in basic computer skills: including understanding how to operate a personal computer, word processing, and using the Internet and emails.

The program is available to people who are either in work or looking to get back into the workforce, currently receive welfare support, and have no previous post-secondary school qualifications in IT.

It is provided free at GippsTAFE’s Warragul Campus, Queen Street, Warragul in the Internet Café. The program will be conducted in classes where students will receive personalised attention and support as they learn.

Each participant will have access to their own PC, and easy-to-understand manual that they can take away and keep, and the units of training covered in the program are nationally accredited and contribute to a Certificate I in Information Technology.

Karen Scott, Internet Café Administrator, said "Students are very happy to have an informal learning environment where they can work at their own pace and overcome their anxieties about using computers."

"The one-on-one assistance is appreciated as they move through the program, participants also say that we serve great coffee, which is a bonus!" added Ms Scott.

Alan McLellan, BITES program participant said "I wanted to do the BITES program to improve my skills so I could update my resume for better employment prospects, and found that the one on one assistance I received when needed, in a warm friendly classroom with good coffee, is helping me learn at my own time and pace.

BITES program participant, Louise Taylor, said "Clean, ergonomically designed equipment, a quiet learning environment and a highly competent tutor made the learning experience about as stress- free as it’s possible to be."

Anyone who believes they might be eligible for this exciting initiative should contact GippsTAFE Warragul on 5623 2740, or contact their local Centrelink office.
