Fires In Gippsland

While DSE resources have been heavily committed to the fire near Erica, there were also ten other fires ignited by lightning in Gippsland on Friday afternoon.

By Department of Sustainability & Environment - 23rd January 2006 - Back to News

The Cann River fire district had two fires at Cobon and Steve Creek, there were two fires 20 kilometres north west of Bairnsdale, one 11 kilometres south west of Bendoc, two 25 kilometres north of Buchan and one eight kilometres north east of Nowa Nowa at Lemon Hill.

Close to the big fire in Moondarra State Park, a fire was ignited near the Blue rock Dam, north west of Moe.

DSE firefighters responded quickly to all of these fires and all are under control today.

Another lightning strike started a fire at Black Range, 30 kilometres north west of Heyfield, which is currently five hectares in size.

DSE crews working with dozers and hand trailing have managed to get a track around this fire, so it is not actively spreading, but burning material continues to cross the line.

Acting Regional Fire Manager Laurie Jeremiah said that all of DSE's resources are committed to these fires, focusing on the Erica fire, but maintaining capability for new fires occurring throughout the region.
