Bass Coast South Gippsland Business AllianceBarry Heard comes to Inverloch By Pat Coles - 14th February 2012 - Back to News Acclaimed Gippsland author Barry Heard will be the guest speaker at a breakfast event to be held at Inverloch on Thursday, February 23rd.
Born in 1945 in Melbourne Victoria; Barry moved to country Victoria at the age of nine. He left school at fifteen. His only academic achievements during those days at the Swifts Creek Elementary School were in Arithmetic, Algebra and Geometry. He failed any subjects related to writing or reading.
His first job was on a farm at Ensay, just up the road from where he grew up. Heard grew up without television, poor radio reception and rarely left the area. As a young adult, his interests were football, cricket, badminton, Young Farmers, Scouts and many local committees. By 1965, at aged 20, he had a steady girlfriend and looked forward to a future in the area.
One of the first of our young men to be conscripted in the mid nineteen sixties, Barry found himself in the army and at war in Vietnam.
After his return to home, the farm and old acquaintances, he soon found he was unable to settle or fit in. His experiences in Vietnam had changed him forever.
After a devastating breakdown in 1997 Barry turned to writing as a form of therapy. Now a bestselling author, ‘Well Done Those Men’, a memoir, is included in the curriculum of more than a hundred Australian schools.
Barry is also the author of ‘The View from Connors Hill’, documenting his early life in the high country and ‘TAG’, a novel based on the experiences of soldiers from previous wars.
A compelling and inspiring speaker, this presentation should not be missed.

The Bass Coast South Gippsland Business Alliance is a not-for-profit partnership between Bendigo Bank, Telstra Country Wide, Bass Coast and South Gippsland Shire Councils, GippsTAFE and the Bass Coast South Gippsland Local Learning and Employment Network.
