Council Meeting to update on TAFE relocation to central Sale

The next Wellington Shire Council Meeting on Tuesday 3 August will provide the local community with a significant update on a proposed $25 million East Gippsland Institute of TAFE campus in the heart of Sale.

By Wellington Shire Council - 29th July 2004 - Back to News

Amongst items on the agenda, the Institute of TAFE will make a presentation on its feasibility study into a proposed new campus on Punt Lane.

Wellington Shire Council will raise for discussion, and decision, the possible purchase of vacant land on the corner of Cobains Road and Gibsons Road in Sale as an alternative location for Sale Netball Association - which is presently based on part of the proposed Punt Lane site.

The vacant land in question is owned by the Department of Human Services and has been identified by the council as the preferred location following extensive discussions. The council will decide at next week’s meeting whether to enter into a Conditional Contract of Sale to purchase the land.

The Institute of TAFE recently received planning approval from the Government to develop concept drawings supporting a potential relocation to the heart of Sale. The institute is keen to make the move from its present, outdated West Sale Aerodrome campus to a new purpose–built complex on the former army drill hall site in Punt Lane. This has the potential to generate enormous benefits for the shire, both economically and socially.

The council meeting starts at 10am and is being held in the Wellington Room, in Wellington Shire’s Port of Sale Civic Centre in Foster Street, Sale. Any members of the community and organisations interested in the proposed TAFE initiative are encouraged to attend.

It will also be broadcast live on the council’s website www.wellington.vic.gov.au complete with the provision of a chatroom. This means viewers will be able to submit questions directly to the council in real time and have them answered during the meeting.

Said Wellington’s acting Chief Executive Officer, Steve Dickson: "This meeting will provide a significant update on the proposed relocation of the TAFE to the heart of Sale and we are encouraging anyone with an interest to come along and participate in the discussion.

"The TAFE relocation would provide a significant economic and educational boost for Sale and Wellington Shire as a whole. However, one of our priorities is also to ensure that Sale Netball Association has a suitable new home. We appreciate the cooperation and constructive ongoing discussions we have had with them over this issue and are keen to maintain this as the project progresses."
