Sewer Pump Station And Rising Main Upgraded At Bellbird Park

Gippsland Water has recently completed a $500,000 upgrade of the sewer pump station and rising main at Bellbird Park in Drouin.

This initiative will ensure efficient service for customers and will improve capacity to allow for expansion of Drouin’s residential area.

Gippsland Water contractors Quinn Civil were engaged to complete the design and construction of the pump station. The company proposed to construct the pump station well by the "caisson" method as a strategy to reduce risk associated with trench collapse, and preserve the adjacent gum trees.

The caisson method involves casting a section of the well, then sinking it by excavating from the inside. The well at Bellbird Park was formed in four sections, with Quinn Civil staff assembling the concrete reinforcement.

Gippsland Water Managing Director John Mitchell said that the pump station upgrade is part of an ongoing program aimed at restoring ageing pump stations to operate safely, and meet environmental requirements.

"Gippsland Water’s ongoing capital works program is one of many ways we continue to maintain, improve and deliver efficient services to our customers, and benefit the community," Mr Mitchell said.

The previous pump station, built in 1982, did not have sufficient capacity to serve two proposed housing developments in the area.

The upgrade of the sewer pump station and rising main took six months to complete and has been brought online prior to the completion of any houses in the new estate.

Gippsland Water would like to thank the community for their patience while the upgrade was underway.
