The Economics Of Once A Day Milking

A free seminar on Once-a-Day (OAD) milking will be held at the DPI Ellinbank Centre on November 14, 2007.

By Department of Primary Industries - 9th November 2007 - Back to News

Interest in OAD milking is increasingly driven by the labour saving and lifestyle benefits it can offer, and is relatively common in countries such as New Zealand.

Other motivators include:

  • using it as a drought management strategy;
  • avoiding capital expenditure outlays eg a new dairy; or
  • for herd management reasons, eg improving cow condition by reducing distances animals need to walk each day.

Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Ellinbank researcher, Dan Armstrong, and Leongatha dairyfarmer, Steve Riley, will present their findings on OAD Milking – The economics and how it may fit into Victorian Dairy Farm Systems at a free seminar being held at DPI Ellinbank Centre, Hazeldean Road on Wednesday, 14 November, 2007 from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm.

Dan will present an analysis of the economic impact of changing to OAD Milking for a Victorian farm business. Both a long-term switch to OAD Milking for full-lactations, and a part-lactation option for 2007/08, will be discussed.

Steve recently completed a survey of farmers milking once-a-day and has also implemented it on his own farm for part-lactation. Steve will discuss some findings from the survey and some of his own experiences.

The presentation is part of the DPI Ellinbank Seminar Series being held on a regular basis over 2007/08 – watch this newspaper for details.
