The awards honour regional achievers throughout Victoria who have contributed to their local community, provides a positive image in their area, and is an outstanding role model to the wider Victorian community.

The ‘Regional Achiever‘ from Latrobe will receive a trophy and $1000 to put towards their field of work, and the recipient of the ‘Community of the Year Award’ will receive a community plaque and a perpetual trophy.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, said that there are many individuals and groups in the local area that demonstrate exceptional achievement and make a significant contribution to the local community.

"Although the efforts of these groups are much appreciated by local citizens, the Regional Achievers Award and the Community of the Year Award provides a way of offering state-wide recognition for their hard work and dedication," Cr Middlemiss said.

The Alcoa Regional Achievers Award will honour five people throughout regional Victoria who have made a significant difference to their community through their work.

Previous recipients were awarded for providing a healthy, more informed and productive community lifestyle through organising community information sessions and dedicating time to work with and in the local surroundings.

The Kleenheat Gas Community of the Year Award rewards a community, group, organisation or town that has implemented a project which was beneficial to the local community.

Previous recipients include sport, art, entertainment, agricultural, community, business and volunteer groups that have made a significant contribution to their local area.

The awards are being presented in regional Victoria for only the second time, although the awards have been distributed throughout regional areas in Western Australia and Queensland for some years. In Latrobe it will be the inaugural presentation, following Latrobe City Council’s support for the awards.

"Latrobe City Council felt that it was important to sponsor these awards because they let people know that the community appreciates their hard work. It also raises the profile of Latrobe’s achievements in other regional areas, and provides a platform for encouraging and sharing initiatives," Cr Middlemiss said.

"I strongly urge people to nominate groups and individuals from Latrobe City that are making a difference in our community," Cr Middlemiss said.

Nominations close Friday 11 July 2003, with the judging of the awards to take place in August. For more information contact the Awards Office, telephone 9877 0477, or access the Awards Australia website, www.awardsaustralia.com
