Landmark careers development at Monash Gippsland

For the first time in Monash Gippsland’s history, a Careers Consultant has been employed full time.

Christine Prendergast has been appointed Careers Consultant at the Gippsland Campus. Her role is to prepare students for their careers and help them plan for their future.

She brings with her a wealth of experience in Careers Counselling and Planning, having held positions in a variety of related roles in the past.

During her extensive career, Ms. Prendergast has been a former President of Morwell Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Director of Prendergast Career Development and a Senior Career Consultant with EPR International, as well as holding various positions on Boards and committees.

Ms. Prendergast is excited by her new role and sees it as a valuable opportunity to contribute to industry in the region, "I intend to work closely with industry," she said.

As the Careers Consultant, Ms. Prendergast will run workshops to help students realise their full potential, giving them the confidence they need to enter the workforce. "I can prepare people for employment... Often young people have skills they don’t readily acknowledge (such as) teamwork and problem-solving skills," she said.

Ms. Prendergast hopes to work closely with businesses in the region and values their input. Through the training she will offer Monash Gippsland students, she aims to retain students in the area long after they graduate, "it’s about planning for the future," she said.

Ms. Prendergast grew up in Maffra and currently lives in Callignee. She moved away from the area but came back to take up this position. "It’s a great opportunity to really apply the principles and practices of career planning. Helping young people look long-term into the future is something I really enjoy," she said.
