The Gippsland Integrated Natural Resources Forum will be officially launched in Morwell on World Environment Day, Thursday June 5 2003, by Mr Peter Sutherland, General Manager, International Division, Department of Sustainability and Environment. The Forum will also release the first Natural Resources Report Card for the Gippsland region.

The Natural Resources Report Card will be published by the Gippsland Integrated Natural Resources Forum each year. The purpose of the Report Card is to provide an honest and independent appraisal of both the condition and stewardship of Gippsland’s natural resources.

This first Report Card focuses on 12 key natural assets that represent the richness and diversity of the Gippsland region:

· The Gippsland Lakes

· Thomson River

· Corner Inlet/Wilson’s Promontory

· Forests of East Gippsland

· Coastal Parks of Far East Gippsland

· Coastal Living - Bass Coast & Phillip Island

· Alpine National Park

· Macalister Irrigation District

· Snowy River

· Dryland Dairy Farming of West and South Gippsland

· Mitchell River

· Brown Coal based Energy Industry

The Gippsland Integrated Natural Resources Forum is a whole-of-Gippsland approach to the management of the region’s natural resources under the slogan "Catchment Health – Gippsland’s Wealth." The role of the Forum is to achieve a cooperative and strategic approach to natural resource management in the region.

The Forum has a membership of some 60 organisations including government departments, catchment management authorities, shire councils, rural and urban water authorities, universities, private industry, regional development bodies, community based groups, and cross agency groups. The Reference Group and Executive are drawn from the broader Forum membership, with an independent chair: Professor Barry Hart.
