Anglers Taking Undersized Bream From Gippsland Lakes

Following patrols over the weekend, Fisheries Officers have expressed concern with the number of undersize black bream being taken by recreational anglers from the Gippsland Lakes and their tributaries.

The minimum size requirement for Black Bream in Victoria is 28 centimetres.

Two men from Melbourne, inspected on the Tambo River were found to be in possession of 20 very small black bream.

Senior Fisheries Officer, Peter Simpson, said the largest of small bream was less the 14 centimetres when measured.

"That means that none of the small fish taken by these men was even half the legal size," Mr Simpson said.

"This is concerning because we need to see that black bream are able to remain in the water long enough to become large black bream, to ensure fish for the future."

In this instance both men each received $350 infringement notices for taking and possessing fish less than the minimum size.

Prosecution remains an option for those prepared to contravene the regulations relating to the minimum legal length of fish where penalties now exceed $2000 with the possibility of a conviction being recorded.

Another 12 people also received on the spot fines for fisheries offences including taking undersized fish and fishing without a licence.

Mr Simpson said Gippsland patrols would continue to monitor angler’s catches to ensure the regulations were being adhered to.

Anyone who see or suspects illegal fishing activity is urged to call the 24-hour reporting line 13-FISH (13 3474).
