Ingram calls on Minister to guarantee timber money

Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has again called on the State Government to look after those affected by reductions in timber harvesting.

By Craig Ingram - 1st September 2003 - Back to News

"When the sustainable yield reductions were announced, the State Government gave commitments to the workers, contractors and licensees stating that the $80 million package would ensure that those workers, industry participants and the community would be looked after.

"A large number of contractors and timber industry businesses who have met the Our Forests, Our Future guidelines have not received offers or commitments of assistance from the industry transition taskforce or answers to their correspondence.

"In Parliament last week, I called on the Minister for Environment, John Thwaites, to give a guarantee that the money has not dried up, and that those contractors and timber industry businesses that have met the criteria as a direct result of the Our Forests, Our Future reforms will get assistance.

"I will keep pursuing the matter with the Minister and the Premier to ensure that those who are eligible will receive the assistance promised by the State Government," Mr Ingram concluded.
