If you are lucky enough to also have a diverse musical palette, then the result of this accumulated experience is a musical treasure chest to delight even the hardest of critics.

The Bohemian Nights will showcase their diverse musical talents at Tyers Hall on Sunday 4 March 2007 at 7.30pm.

Latrobe’s performing arts and venues co-ordinator, Kathleen Roberts said that The Bohemian Nights trio was the epitome of a long and colourful musical career.

"The trio comprises Ernie Gruner on violin, mandolin and vocals, Phil Carroll on accordion and vocals and Eugene Belenko on double bass.

Their wide ranging repertoire visits many countries and musical styles including French, Italian, Hungarian, Gypsy Swing, Jewish, Arabic and Russian music," Ms Roberts explained.

Ernie Gruner is a classically trained violinist. He has performed in orchestras and string quartets as well as bush bands. Ernie discovered his love of klezmer music, a style of Jewish music developed for celebrations such as weddings and he went on to form Klezmeritis along with Phil Carroll. He now regularly shares his klezmer knowledge through festivals, music camps and public workshops. Ernie is also a member of other bands performing music from many exotic genres including Greek, shepardic and gypsy.

Phil Carroll plays accordion, piano, keyboards, flute, ney, zurna, quartertone accordion as well as singing. He began his career with Beat Around the Bush Band which is still going strong 25 years on. He has conducted choirs and performed with jazz, Latin and calypso bands.

Phil has also been involved in world music playing with the Indiginy Music Ensemble at Ayers Rock Resort, a Morrocan group and a flamenco ensemble, as well as French and Italian music. For the past nine years he has directed and managed the six-piece Middle-Eastern music and dance group Yalla! who performed in the Café Concert Series in 2001. Phil also composes music for films, documentaries, music ensembles and dancers.

Eugene Belenko, was born in Russia and has performed with the Ukrainian Chamber Orchestra and Kolos Dance Company. In Australia he has performed with Melbourne Musicians Chamber Orchestra and the Geelong Chamber Orchestra. He has performed both as a concert musician and as an orchestra soloist playing double bass. He is also a lecturer in double bass at Monash University. As well as his classical performances, Eugene also appears with hybrid classical/folk ensembles.

Ms Roberts said that The Bohemian Nights were the first act in the Café Concert Series 2007.

"The Café Concert series has been touring regional Victoria for the past ten years, showcasing many performers and their different styles of music. The rest of the program for this year includes stunning Russian singer/songwriter Zulya with her classy band The Children of the Underground. The third concert will be performed by George Butrumlis, one of Australia’s finest exponents of the piano accordion playing a selection of his favourite music from Brazil with his trio. The year ends with the formidable six piece Gutbucket Jug Band," Ms Roberts concluded.

Tickets for The Bohemian Nights are available from the Box Office on 5176 3559. Season tickets for the 2007 Café Concert series are also available from the Box Office at a discounted price of $56 for the four show series, a saving of $24.
