Hall Supports Funding For Orbost Centre

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Province Peter Hall has questioned the ‘double standards’ for publicly-owned art galleries in Victoria.

Speaking in State Parliament this week, Mr Hall raised the issue of the Orbost Exhibition Centre which does not receive any recurrent funding to maintain its day-to-day operations.

In making a plea for urgent funding from the Minister for Arts, Mr Hall said the gallery was an outstanding facility which deserved greater support from the State Government.

"When I visited the National Gallery of Victoria here in Melbourne recently it cost me nothing to get in but the people in Orbost have to pay a $4 fee to enter," Mr Hall said.

"I do not see why people in the country should have to pay to go to their galleries when people in Melbourne can go to places like the National Gallery free of charge.

"This facility in Orbost is a remarkable new gallery space that is the equal of many other galleries that we have in regional Victoria."

Mr Hall said the community-based board operating the gallery was forced to charge an entrance fee in order to cover the costs of operating the facility.

"It’s not their fault, they need to cover costs to keep the doors open," Mr Hall said.

"I met recently with manager Ruth Hansen at the exhibition centre and I was extremely impressed by the quality of the display and the hard work by Ruth and the wider community to get the project off the ground.

"It has the potential to be a tourism icon for Orbost as part of an overall package to promote the timber industry and Snowy River region.

"But the government has got to come to the party with some recurrent funding to keep things ticking along. Both the State and Federal Government made major contributions to the construction phase and it’s in the best interests of all involved to make sure it is sustainable and a great success for the East Gippsland region."
