Coalition To Fund Morwell Ses Facility

Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe has pledged $50,000 during SES Awareness Week for the Morwell SES to establish a facility to house their Heavy Road Rescue Vehicles if a Coalition government is elected this month.

By Russell Northe - 18th November 2010 - Back to News

Mr Northe said Morwell SES’s current base at Latrobe Regional Airport is unable to house the two Heavy Road Rescue Vehicles due to the team being unable to meet turnout targets of 8 minutes for road trauma from this location.

One of the Heavy Road Rescue Vehicles is housed in Traralgon at the Ambulance Victoria site in Campbell Street whilst the second vehicle is housed in an industrial estate in Morwell.

"However, it is not garaged and is exposed to the elements. Essentially the Morwell SES requires a two bay garage to be constructed within the township of Morwell to accommodate this Heavy Road Rescue Vehicle.

Mr Northe said that despite being long called for, the Brumby Labor Government has ignored the Morwell SES.

"I had made representation to the Minister on numerous occasions regarding this issue, and have received little support from the Labor Government.

"This $50,000 will go a long way to assisting Morwell SES achieve their goals and will help with finding a more permanent and suitable location within the township of Morwell to house these important assets.

"In conjunction with Latrobe City and various other stakeholders, we will ensure that the Morwell SES will receive the support and funding it deserves so they can reach their turn out targets."

In additional to this local announcement, the Coalition has also pledged $8 million to ease the pressure on overworked VICSES volunteers.

"The additional funding provided by the Coalition amounts to a five per cent boost in government funding," Mr Northe said.

"It will allow the service to employ volunteer support officers, enhance volunteer training and boost its capacity to tackle storms and floods."

Mr Northe highlighted the work done by the Emergency Service team, and the vital and pivotal role they undertake within the community.

"Whether it is storms and floods, road trauma or assisting other emergency service personnel during bushfires the SES is always there to lend a hand during a time of need. We are blessed to have such wonderful, highly trained volunteers."
