Spring rains fill reservoir before summer seasonThe heavy rains may have soaked supporters during the AFL Grand Final but it was more than welcome in Westernport, which has now secured its supply for summer.
By Westernport Water - 29th September 2009 - Back to News Candowie Reservoir registered a rise over Grand Final weekend from Friday’s 87% storage level to 99% (2240 ML) on Monday, 28 September 2009.
According to Westernport Water’s General Manager-Operations, Steven Porter, this is the biggest weekend rise in capacity this year.
"Candowie Reservoir recorded 108mm of rain in July, 112mm in August and 106mm to 28 September.
"Rainfall over the catchment for the first nine months of 2009 has been 610mm compared to 513mm for the same period in 2006; the driest year in the catchment for the 104 years that records have been kept.
Residents too have also played a part in securing supply for the upcoming summer season.
According to Westernport Water’s Managing Director, Murray Jackson: "By adhering to the permanent water savings measures our customers have helped us deliver a secure water supply for summer and the year ahead."
The good rainfall and rise in storage level has also enabled Westernport Water to stop pumping from the Corinella aquifer. This will allow the borefield to recover earlier than was expected. The Westernport area remains on permanent water savings measures. You can check these measures at www.westernportwater.com.au or phone 1300 720 711.
