Bass Coast Heats UpThe arrival of warmer weather and the increased population bring an added challenge for Bass Coast Shire Council’s Community Safety team. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 24th October 2007 - Back to News Council’s Community Safety Manager, Peter Laydon, says residents need to plan ahead for the summer months, and take into consideration the other people in the area.
"Council has a responsibility to maintain a safe, peaceful and healthy environment for the whole community," said Mr Laydon.
"For example, now is a good time to get your properties ready for the summer months," Mr Laydon said.
Mr Laydon reminded rural property owners that if they are going to conduct a burn off, they need to give their adjoining neighbours 24 hours notice.
"And if your land is next to a residential area, you’ll need to notify our Local Laws Department before you start burning, so they can inspect the site," reminded Mr Laydon.
"You also need to notify Vic Fire two hours prior to the burn on (03) 9887 7766."
Mr Laydon said all the information people need about burning off regulations is available on Council’s website.
"It is important that people adhere to these regulations," said Mr Laydon.
"If you have any concerns, before you start burning off, visit the website and look under the Community Safety heading, or call Council on 1300 BCOAST (1300 226 278)."
Mr Laydon said residents in urban areas should also make sure their properties were ready for summer.
"You need to cut back grass and undergrowth, remove green waste and any rubbish lying around," said Mr Laydon.
Council is providing its usual free green waste disposal service in the lead up to summer.
"Household green waste can be disposed of free of charge from 1 November to 10 December 2007 at any Council Recycling and Waste Transfer Station," said Mr Laydon.
"This service is available any day that the transfer station normally operates, and is to help property owners clean up their land prior to the fire season.
"It is open to green waste contractors as well as residents.
"But people clearing their gardens need to be aware that they can’t include any noxious weeds in this green waste," reminded Mr Laydon.
