Volunteers Wanted!This year volunteer groups working in foreshores and bushland reserves will be doing needed revegetation with over 10,000 plants ready for planting. Read more here. By news@gippsland - 4th July 2016 - Back to News It’s that time of year again when the volunteer groups working in our foreshores and bushland reserves get their hands dirty and do some much needed revegetation.
The more the merrier this year, with over 10,000 plants requiring planting in our foreshore and bushland reserves.
Whether you’re living in townhouse in Inverloch, a beach shack in Cape Woolamai or a house on the hill in Rhyll, there is a volunteer group near you!
This year, Bass Coast Shire Council has some exciting news with the creation of two new groups – Friends of Scenic Estate Reserve (FOSER) and Friends of Smiths Beach Reserve.
Last year, Scenic Estate Reserve was opened to the public as a natural reserve for walking. It was Council’s decision to get the community involved in maintaining and enhancing this beautiful new reserve, and thus FOSER were born.
Council is currently in the process of forming a new group, Friends of Saltwater Creek Reserve, to undertake works within the Saltwater Creek Reserve in Ventnor. If you are interested in getting involved or would like any further information, please contact Council.
The next working bee dates are:
- Ventnor Coast Care Association July 16 at 10am meeting at Aloha Drive
- Red Rocks Coastcare July 3 at 10am meeting in the Red Rocks Carpark
- Saltwater Creek Coastcare August 14 at 10am at Saltwater Creek
- Silverleaves Conservation Association Inc. September 20 at 10am meeting at the Silverleaves Store
- Friends of Scenic Estate September 11 at the main carpark
- Cape Woolamai Coast Action July 9 at 8am meeting at the Cleeland Road Carpark
- Cape Paterson Residents and Ratepayers Association July 9 meeting place to be confirmed
- Newhaven Coast Action August 7 at 10am meeting place to be confirmed
- South Gippsland Conservation Society (Inverloch) July 9 at 9am meeting to be confirmed
- Phillip Island Landcare July 10 with meeting time and place to be confirmed
Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Jordan Crugnale, said the planting season is one of the busiest times of the year for the volunteer groups.
"Timing is obviously crucial for the plants to settle into a moist ground and establish themselves before summer sets in," Cr Crugnale said.
"While these next few months present a visual flurry of planting activity, our fabulous volunteer groups certainly do not hibernate thereafter but work year round on programs and projects from weed removal, litter collection, school holiday activities, themed talks, vegetation protection, undertake minor infrastructure projects and even apply for every grant imaginable and available.
"We thank them for their commitment and their vision to protecting and enhancing our natural environment that we all appreciate and enjoy."
