Celebrating Our Sporting Past

The history of local sport and recreation has again been honoured with the recent launch of "Celebrating our Sporting Past, Volume 2".

This much anticipated second volume, compiled and published by Bass Coast Shire Council, contains a collection of historical stories inspired by photographs from Bass Coast’s sporting and leisure history.

The stories were voluntarily submitted by local writers and historians and provide a unique insight into our local history.

Some of the subjects include local Melbourne Cup winner Wollomai, the Kilcunda tennis and football clubs, Inverloch and its basketball club of 1945, The Bass Valley Rifle Club around 1950, the Wonthaggi Citizens’ Band and the undefeated Wonthaggi Women’s Football team of 1965.

The launch’s guest speaker, David Rapley, said: "These warm reminiscences are truly a record of those things that served to connect our communities and show also the impact of national and international events upon them."

Mr Rapley is a restorer of antique motor cars and has a passion for historical writing and sports. His speech for the launch included a synopsis of the stories and he concluded by saying: "We all have a story worth telling and it will always be of value to others who come after."

Books are $10 each and are available at Council Customer Service Centres, Bass Coast libraries or by contacting your local Historical Society. Proceeds will go towards the publication of next year’s booklet.

Getting Our Kids To And From School Safely

Bass Coast Shire Council and Newhaven Primary School recently co-hosted a Bike Ed Instructors' course at the Primary School.

The course caters for teachers and parents who will be teaching Bike Ed in schools, as well as volunteers who operate Riding School Buses in the schools between Wonthaggi and Cowes.

Newhaven has developed a Bike Ed track which is used for the district's Bike Ed Challenge. The Challenge teaches children in the Upper Primary years the skills needed in order to cycle safely, including road rules and basic equipment maintenance.

A Riding School Bus operates like a normal bus, with children and volunteers cycling to and from school along a set route, picking up or dropping off passengers along the way.

Bass Coast Shire Council currently facilitates a Riding School Bus from Cape Woolamai to Newhaven and will be launching the Cowes Primary School Bus on May 4. This will coincide with Walk Safely To School Day, a Pedestrian Council initiative.

"On this day schools across Australia are encouraging children to walk safely at least part of the way to school, as opposed to travelling all the way in a vehicle," Council’s Walking School Bus Facilitator, Don Turner said.

By ‘boarding’ either of the Walking or Riding School Buses, children make new friends, increase their fitness, get some fresh air and learn about road safety while parents can leave their car at home, avoid the school hour rush and reduce carbon emissions around schools and their neighbourhoods.

Primary Schools in Bass Coast Shire participating in the program include Cowes, Newhaven College, Newhaven, San Remo, Powlett River, Billson St Wonthaggi, Wonthaggi North and Inverloch.

For more information on either of the programs please contact your local school or Bass Coast Shire Council on 5671 2211 or 5951 3311.

Community Forum Held In Wonthaggi

Wonthaggi town entrances, centenary celebrations and the proposed Heritage Overlay were some of the major topics covered at the Bass Coast Shire Community Forum in Wonthaggi on Saturday April 14.

Council’s Director of Community and Economic Development, Richard Perry presented an informative Community Profile on Wonthaggi. Some of the facts included:

  • The average income for Wonthaggi residents is $32 172, which is $10,000 less than the Victorian average.
  • 62% of people are low income earners, making less than $400 per week. This is compared to the state average of 47.2%.
  • The median housing price has increased from $66 000 in 1995 to $200,000 in 2005 and housing blocks increased by 400%.
  • The top four industries that people are employed in are retail trade, health and community services, manufacturing and construction.

Shire Mayor, Cr Neville Goodwin said it was unfortunate that not many people could attend the forum.

"There was some very interesting information for Wonthaggi residents presented at the forum.

"There was also an opportunity for community members to talk informally with Councillors and senior Council staff.

"If you would like more information about the topics covered please contact us on 5671 2211," encouraged Cr Goodwin.

Some of the other topics discussed include an update on the Wonthaggi-Dalyston Structure Plan and a proposed Wonthaggi Gold Club Development.
