The award was presented at a Conference dinner on behalf of the global network of community safety representatives by Professor Leif Svanstrom, Director of the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Collaborating Centre on Community Safety Promotion, based at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.

Professor Svanstrom said that Mr Harberts has dedicated himself to community safety in Latrobe City and his work throughout the state of Victoria made him the ideal recipient for the International Distinguished Safe Community Award.

"Mr Henk Harberts is outstanding in the field of Safe Community Practice. He has the best of prerequisites for working in the field and is leading this area nationally and internationally," Professor Svanstrom said.

Mr Harberts said that he is honoured that his efforts in community safety have been recognised and he will continue to expand and promote Latrobe’s achievements in community safety wherever his work takes him.

"It is a true testament to the municipality that community safety representatives from throughout the world are attending Conferences in which Latrobe’s community safety initiatives are addressed and discussed, and I am thrilled that the efforts of our community have been acknowledged on an international scale," Mr Harberts said.

Latrobe City Acting Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley, said that Mr Harberts’ constant effort has had a significant impact on Latrobe City becoming an internationally recognised safe community.

"Henk has worked tirelessly to promote community safety. Throughout his travels, Henk has studied and discussed strategies in reducing community injuries, such as road trauma and common household accidents, and has always been a true Latrobe City ambassador, promoting the municipality everywhere he goes," Mr Buckley concluded.
