Latrobe City Council’s contractors have begun construction of the first stage of the Morwell to Traralgon shared pathway.

Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan, said the $4.5 million project would eventually see the path link the two towns to improve connectivity and liveability.

"The community has been talking about this pathway for years and we’re pleased the project is underway. Stage one will be the construction of the 2.5 metre wide path from the Morwell Railway Station to McDonald Street in Morwell. The works for this phase are expected to take around six weeks.

"The section from McDonald Street to Kernot Hall will start in November and the further stages of the project, from Waterhole Creek to Alexanders Road to Old Melbourne Road and finally, to Coonoc Road, Traralgon will take place next year. The path, which is around ten kilometres long, is expected to be completed in June 2018," Cr O’Callaghan said.

"Provision of a shared pathway that allows people to ride their bicycles or to walk or jog between two of the city’s major towns is not only about the physical link, it’s about encouraging exercise and promoting healthier lifestyles," Cr O’Callaghan concluded.

Funding for this project is being provided by the Federal government ($1.6 million) and Victorian governments Safe System Road Infrastructure Program ($2.95 million).
