Goldfields heritage bid

Australia’s World Heritage Tentative List is a list of ‘properties’ that the Australian Government intends to nominate for the World Heritage List sometime in the future. Achieving World Heritage Listing is a catalyst for regional regeneration and is estimated to be worth $1 billion to the region, across six locations, over 10 years.

The Victorian Goldfields World Heritage Bid website provides a detailed overview of the bid. Three Project Working Groups (PWGs) involving relevant government agencies, local businesses and the community will be established with the primary purpose to identify appropriate projects to support the sustainable development of the region.

The three project working groups include:

  • Tourism
  • Infrastructure
  • Business Support

The PWGs are endorsed by Baw Baw Shire Council’s Walhalla Goldfields Project Management Group. East Ward Councillor Brendan Kingwill is encouraging community members to put their hand up and join a project working group. "These new working groups are a way Council can work collectively with the community to pave the way for some exciting plans and initiatives in Walhalla," Cr Kingwill said.

To express your interest to join a Project Working Group, please complete the Expression of Interest Form on Baw Baw Connect, Council’s online engagement platform. Expressions of Interest close 11:59pm on Sunday 16 November 2025. For more, visit Baw Baw Connect website.
