Cycling brings connection

Last week’s ride marked a special milestone as Wilson Lodge residents joined the program for the first time, with smiles and happy chatter reflecting the positive impact of the initiative. Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said programs like Cycling Without Age Gippsland play an important role in supporting wellbeing and social connection for older Australians.

"Cycling Without Age Gippsland is a wonderful example of community volunteers making a real difference in the lives of older residents. These rides are about much more than getting outdoors; they help people reconnect with their community, share stories and enjoy meaningful moments together. It was fantastic to see Wilson Lodge residents take part for the first time, and I congratulate everyone involved in continuing to grow this valuable local service," Mr Chester said.

Record-breaking ride

Cycling Without Age Gippsland looks forward to welcoming Wilson Lodge as part of its regular monthly ride program in Sale, with demand for rides continuing to increase across the region. The organisation is supported by dedicated volunteer pilots and community partners who help ensure older residents can remain connected, active and engaged.

Cycling Without Age Gippsland has also hosted its oldest East Gippsland passenger, with 98-year-old Joyce Grimer enjoying a circuit of the Lakes Entrance esplanade with her daughter Pam Waters. Local volunteer Julie Chester was the pilot for the record-breaking ride.

CWAG is a community-run charity program that provides free rides to people who can no longer cycle by themselves and has hosted about 100 residents over the past six months, with plans to increase the frequency of ride days.
