APP provides Crinigan Road Reserve with project boostCrinigan Road Bushland Reserve receive project funding boost from next-door-neighbour on Tuesday By Latrobe City Council - 29th June 2001 - Back to News The Crinigan Road Bushland Reserve received a much needed project funding boost from its next-door-neighbour on Tuesday, when Australian Paper Plantations (APP) General Manager, John Cameron presented the Committee of Management with a cheque for $2000.
In accepting the cheque, Dick Donchi, President of the Crinigan Road Bushland Reserve Committee, said the money would be used for fencing and other related improvement works that were being undertaken to enhance and protect the reserve.
“Our Management Committee is extremely grateful for this donation. It allows us to extend our program of developing the Crinigan Road Bushland Reserve for citizens and visitors to enjoy, while providing additional protection for flora and fauna through fencing and erosion control. It is even more gratifying that this donation comes from a next-door-neighbour, Australian Paper Plantations, who have a plantation adjacent to this bushland, who have demonstrated considerable interest in working with our committee to further this reserve,” Mr Donchi said.
Mr Cameron indicated that APP’s plantations and native forest reserves provided a diverse range of habitats which complemented public parks and reserves.
“APP has donated or exchanged 400 hectares of land for the expansion of public parks and reserves in Gippsland with the donation of 96 hectares at Jungadale being the most recent,” Mr Cameron said.
“Latrobe City is fortunate to have a number of bushland reserves on the edge of its urban areas such as the Traralgon Railway Reservoir Conservation Reserve, the Edward Hunter Reserve in Moe and the Crinigan Road Bushland Reserve in Morwell. These ideal locations provide the community with immense opportunities for recreation, while at the same providing an important habitat for plant and animal species. The management committees of these reserves are doing a great job. They are the real conservationists, getting on with the jobs that need to be done,” Mr Cameron said.
“We are pleased to be supporting Latrobe City and the hard working volunteers on the Reserve Committee in their efforts to improve biodiversity and conservation in the region. A cooperative approach between industry, government and the community can deliver better environmental outcomes,” Mr Cameron concluded.
APP’s District Forester, Stephen Wentworth, said the company was pleased to be working with the Crinigan Road Bushland Reserve Committee, encouraging them in their work. “Apart from providing some financial assistance, APP will be donating trees to provide a wildlife corridor linking the reserve to other areas of native vegetation in the region. Wildlife corridors are being increasingly recognised as vital for maintaining healthy ecosystems,” Mr Wentworth said.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins, said the work being undertaken at the Crinigan Road Bushland Reserve was outstanding.
“In a matter of a few weeks we have seen the young people engaged through the Community Jobs Program do a first rate job on installing boundary fencing which will help protect the reserve from the erosion caused by recreational vehicles. They have carried out work on some of the walking trails and been clearing some of the non-native vegetation,” Cr Jenkins said.
“This is a great example of own community grants money being complemented by corporate donations, and used effectively to provide the citizens of Latrobe with an enhanced recreational and conservation facility,” Cr Jenkins added.
