Local employment must benefit from power station construction, says Mayor

Latrobe City Mayor has called on Edison Mission Energy to maximise opportunities for local employment on the project.

By Latrobe City Council - 4th May 2001 - Back to News

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins has called on Edison Mission Energy, developers of the new gas turbine peak-load power station, to maximise opportunities for local employment on the project.

"In the meantime, local contractors and employees can indicate an expression of interest in working on the new power station by telephoning Latrobe City on 1300 367 700, and we will pass their details on to Edison Mission Energy," Cr Jenkins added.

"While no permanent jobs will be created by this project, it is vitally important that the two-hundred or so jobs created during the short construction stage of the project benefit the local community, and local tradespeople, employees and contractors are given the opportunity to undertake the work," Cr Jenkins said.

"We are therefore calling on Edison Mission energy to ensure a construction management system is put into place which prioritises employment of local contractors and local employees," Cr Jenkins said.

"In addition I am writing to the State Government to ascertain the extent to which they sought and received such undertakings prior to providing assistance for the project," Cr Jenkins said.

"I am also making enquiries of Edison Mission Energy in order to find out who the Control Manager will be and how local workers can access employment
