Morwell to have its own Raceday CupThe second annual Morwell Raceday is being presented by the Traralgon Racing Club on Saturday 21 April at the Glenview Park Racecourse. By Latrobe City Council - 9th April 2001 - Back to News The second annual Morwell Raceday is being presented by the Traralgon Racing Club on Saturday 21 April at the Glenview Park Racecourse.
Traralgon Racing Club President, Roy Vodden, said last year’s inaugural event had been highly successful and well supported, and the meeting would now become an annual event on the racing calendar.
“An event to celebrate and promote Morwell through a race meeting, was identified as an obvious gap in the the Latrobe Valley’s social racing calendar; so the Traralgon Racing Club dedicated a day event to providing for Morwell’s needs last year,” Mr Vodden explained.
“I considered it was a great way for the two towns to do something together, and the Traralgon Racing Club has always appreciated the involvement and support from Morwell businesses and the Morwell community,” Mr Vodden said.
“This event gives Morwell a very special day. The day will be a family day with plenty of entertainment for all, and feature give-aways and competitions. Perhaps we’re even creating a little bit of history here by creating a race meeting for a town that doesn’t actually have a racecourse.
“A key component of the race day will be the inaugural running of the MidValley Morwell Cup an exciting highlight which will establish Morwell’s name well and truly with established horse racing followers,” Mr Vodden said.
“Marquee and Raceday Packages are available to suit all needs and budgets. There will be live music, lucky barrel draws, children’s games and entertainment, and great country racing,” Mr Vodden said
Latrobe City Mayor, Cr Brendan Jenkins, said that Council recognised the benefits of successful race meetings to the community and the huge tourism potential of such events in drawing visitors to the region.
“The Morwell Cup Meeting will be an added bonus to Latrobe City’s sporting events calendar. Few other municipalities can claim to hold three successful Cup Meetings within their boundaries,” Cr Jenkins said.
“I congratulate the Traralgon Racing Club, and Mr Vodden particularly, on initiating a third Cup Meeting for Latrobe, and feel sure the Morwell community and citizens throughout Latrobe will get together and support Morwell’s Cup Day,” Cr Jenkins concluded.
