Gippsland Sports: Gippsland Rugby LeagueGippsland Junior Rugby League initiating the Australian Rugby League Foundation new ‘Smaller Steps Program ’ for primary schools next term. By Kiri Hiriaki - 23rd April 2003 - Back to News Tell us your opinion See what others have said Gippsland Rugby League, supporting the junior committee, will be conducting clinics with Storm league (flag), from a new initiative by the Australian Rugby League Foundation called the "Smaller Steps Program".
The "Joey League" that is one of five levels is a six (6) session that is school team based and regionalised, promoting a 7-a-side competition (league tag) aged from 9-10 year olds. Elected schools will receive this program at the start of next term with a gala day scheduled at the end of the program on Thursday 5th June at Liddiard Road Primary School.
Junior committee President, Will Johnston says this is a great program to be had by all schools, as it’s a non-contact sport. Our main objective is not only to provide children lots of fun but in particular, to increase parent awareness that rugby league is not a violent game as seen with the NRL. Each level of the program introduced will provide different skills to rugby league and if taught correctly, children will enjoy this sport.
Any school wishing to participate can contact Julie Johnston 5176 6511 or League Secretary, 5175 0733.
