Your Community, Your Future, Your Say

Over the next two months local people will have the opportunity to decide what is important to them and their future

By Carol McCormack - 21st October 2002 - Back to News

The "Your Community, Your Future, Your Say" initiative asks local people to put forward their ideas and concerns for the future of their local community. This information will help Council develop a Community Plan for the Shire for the next 10 years.

"The Plan will reflect the unique needs and aspirations of the community," said Cr John Gains, Mayor of Bass Coast Shire Council. "When developing the Plan the Shire will be divided into eight areas, with a Local Action Plan developed for each area."

The Community Plan will be used by the community and the Council to guide actions and directions for the Shire over the next 10 years.

During the next two weeks local people are invited to complete a survey, which asks for opinions on how they currently view their local area and what they would like to see in the future. "Think Tents" will be held at local shopping centres to ask people for their ideas. Surveys are also available at all Council offices or on Council’s website at www.basscoast.vic.gov.au

The information from the survey will be sorted and processed by eight Community Plan Teams. Each Team consists of local people with a keen interest in the future of their community. Each Team represents a different part of the Shire. Each Team will process the surveys that are relevant to their area and develop that section of the Community Plan.

Once a draft Community Plan has been developed, it will be on display for everyone in the Shire to view and make comments about. Meetings will be held between 25 November and 3 December in each of the eight areas that are in the Plan. The meetings will be facilitated by the Community Plan Teams and are an opportunity to discuss the draft Plan and make further suggestions.

A Project Steering Committee of Councillors John Gains, Loretta Leslie and Miranda Sage is overseeing the project.

"Don’t miss this chance to lead change for the area you live in," said Cr Leslie.

Cr Leslie said that the draft Community Plan would be presented to Council in December and will provide the foundation for next year's corporate plan and budget and for planning into the future.

"Whatever your age or life experiences, you have a place in your local community and your needs are important," said Cr Miranda Sage. "The Community Plan aims to bring the collective vision of Bass Coast communities’ into reality."
