Gippsland Rugby League has made application to join Melbourne Rugby League competition

By Kiri Hiriaki - 29th April 2002 - Back to News

Gippsland Rugby League has taken a step back having put the local competition on hold for 2002 with application to join the Melbourne Rugby League competition to be known as Gippsland "Wildcats". As a consolation, MRL permitted Wildcats to play their first match on Sunday coming into their competition in the third round.

Gippsland Wildcats were in high spirits as they travelled to Sunbury to play St. Kilda Saints in the reserve grade. St. Kilda’s defence line was hard to crack with players twice the size of Wildcats as the opening minutes of the match saw them bust through Wildcats defence scoring the first try, unconverted then scoring again with a conversion that saw St. Kilda leading on the scoreboard 10-0. Having regrouped, and with the experience of the Noda Trio, Reno Sobari’s strong run through a tough St. Kilda defence line scored Wildcats first try. Wildcats didn’t stop there with Colin Noda scoring the second try soon after. Newcomer Joe Csik scored two tries through powerful running and determination with both tries converted. St. Kilda did not lie down for too long as they trailed the game scoring one converted try that saw Wildcats leading 22-16 at half time.

The second half was in contrast as St. Kilda came out defending their line well realizing Wildcats could be a threat. The Noda twins once again displayed just how dangerous they can be when given the opportunity to run the ball which saw David score off a brilliant long pass from brother Dwayne to score the only converted try in this half. St. Kilda proved too strong on the day as they defeated Wildcats by an eight-point margin, winning 36-28.

Tries scored: Joe Csik (2); Dwayne Noda (1); Colin Noda (1); David Noda (1). Conversions: David Noda (4).

Best on Ground and Players Player: Joe Csik.

League Executives will meet with Melbourne Rugby League on Tuesday to discuss and finalise a draw. For further information please contact the League Secretary on 0422 151 197.
