Children Return To New Look Preschool At Murray RoadExtensive renovations show a preschool reborn By Support Account - 19th February 2002 - Back to News Students at Murray Road Preschool in Newborough arrived on their first day of term on Monday to a new look preschool, following extensive renovations to the premises during the summer holidays.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins, said that Council had provided funding in excess of $70,000 for the upgrade of one of the older preschools in the area.
"Extensions to the existing building include a new children’s toilet block, foyer and verandah, and the kitchen has been relocated and refurbished. The office has been upgraded and there is new lighting," Cr Jenkins said.
"A much-needed disabled toilet has also been installed and the centre has been repainted and lightened with the addition of a skylight and new windows. Overall, the preschool is much brighter and fresher than before, creating more stimulating surroundings for the children."
"Although term has been delayed by one week to allow the renovations to be completed, the transformation this makeover has achieved is sure to be a hit with the children and parents alike." Cr Jenkins added.
Cr Jenkins said that the money was part of the $250,000 allocated by Council over a three year period to bring all of Latrobe’s preschools up to the standards stipulated in the 1998 Children’s Services Regulations; as well as Council’s own buildings standards. All work on the preschool funding projects should be completed by June 2003.
"The renovations provide a safer and happier environment for the children of Murray Road Preschool, who can now look forward to their preschool year in a new look school," Cr Jenkins concluded.
In total, seventy-three pupils, including three year old prekinder students, will attend Murray Road for the 2002 academic year. There are still places available in all towns in Latrobe City for preschool and prekinder programs run by Council.
