Council To Purchase Moe Child Care Facility

The future of Council child care in Moe and Newborough has been assured

By Latrobe City Council - 28th March 2002 - Back to News

The future of Council child care in Moe and Newborough has been assured following Council’s decision to purchase the Moe Early Learning Centre premises and equipment in Fowler Street, from the liquidator of the former Magda Karwath Child Care Centre.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins, said that following discussions with the liquidator, and an extensive period of consultation on the future of child care services in Moe and Newborough, the premises would be acquired and upgraded.

"Council stepped in to fill the void created when the Magda Karwath Centre closed after twenty-one years of operation in November 1999. By creating the Moe Early Learning Centre on the premises, the provision of child care in Moe was retained. However, we kept our options open, particularly while we reviewed the future of child care in the community," Cr Jenkins explained.

"In April 2001, the Council and GippsTAFE Working Party's Taskforce prepared an options paper on the future provision of child care services in Moe/Newborough which was released for public consultation. The taskforce identified existing child care services and assessed future population trends and the anticipated number of places required. Discussions were also held with the community through a public meeting.

"Following that however, GippsTAFE decided to close the Yallourn Child Care Centre in December 2001.

"While we investigated the possible provision of a child care facility at the former Moe hospital campus further to the opening of the Telstra call centre project, as well as building a low-cost free-standing child care centre as an alternative, it became clear that our best option was to negotiate with the liquidator of the existing Moe Early Learning Centre with a view to purchasing. I’m pleased to announce that we are negotiating on a purchase price, with a view to going ahead with the acquisition," Cr Jenkins said.

"Following the purchase we will be undertaking some priority improvements including internal painting, new floor coverings, and an upgrade of the babies’ playground. Some additional outdoor equipment would also be highly desirable," Cr Jenkins added.

Latrobe City has maintained a very strong commitment to the provision of quality child care in Moe and Newborough, and I am sure that continuing to provide a service through the Moe Early Learning Centre will be welcomed by the parents and children who use our child care services, and the wider community," Cr Jenkins concluded.
