Local architect, Caroline McPhee has won the architectural design competition to design the new Wonthaggi Visitor Information Centre proposed for the Fincher Street Reserve.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 19th April 2007 - Back to News

The project, spearheaded by Bass Coast Shire Council and the Rotary Club of Wonthaggi, is proposed to commemorate the centenary of Wonthaggi in 2009.

Details of the concept design were announced this morning at a public launch.

The theme of the design is based around Wonthaggi’s coal mining history and vision for the future. The building itself imitates the fault lines of subterranean coal seams.

The proposed Centre will incorporate a large visitor information display space, accommodation and ticket booking facilities, a multi-purpose room for community meetings or public displays, public toilets including a 24 hour access disabled toilet and local souvenirs.

The building will use environmentally sustainable materials and features including natural lighting, passive heating and cooling, as well as collection and reuse of water.

Council’s Visitor Services Manager, Peter Francis, says the next step is to finalise the design and seek government funding to make the project a reality.

"This will be a landmark building to celebrate the centenary of Wonthaggi in 2009," said Mr Francis.
