Community forum success

On Tuesday 15 November, around 50 community members came together to increase their knowledge on the challenging but important topic of 'Managing and Resolving Conflict in Community Groups'.

The workshop was facilitated by Karen Morris, Principal Practitioner at FMC Relationship Services Victoria who shared her extensive experience on the topic.

Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan, said that the forum provided attendees with many helpful tips on managing relationships and understanding personality types.

"Whether your group has a large membership base or small, is established or emerging, serves local, regional or wider audiences, there will always be clashes of personality types to deal with. People look at things in different ways. The successful groups manage different perspectives and take action to resolve issues early.

"The facilitator took the attendees through strategies for early intervention, collaboration and influencing, checking-in and how to resolve conflict," Cr O’Callaghan said.

Representatives of the Dispute Settlement Centre Victoria and Consumer Affairs Victoria also attended, providing valuable information about their free local support services relating to personality disputes, mediation and grievance processes and Incorporated Association compliance and model rules.

Cr O’Callaghan added that participants rated the workshop content highly on their evaluation forms.

"The majority view was that the forum was interesting and informative, providing new direction and strategies to action," Cr O’Callaghan said.

This workshop is part of council’s free Community Groups Information and Training Program. The workshops are aimed to provide community members with an opportunity to increase their knowledge, skills and confidence surrounding important topics that encourage the running of effective and robust community groups and clubs. Regular sessions are delivered annually covering a range of topics.
