Member for Morwell Russell Northe has congratulated the Latrobe City Council Youth Council on receiving a Victorian Coalition Government Shape It! grant.

By Russell Northe - 26th August 2013 - Back to News

Mr Northe said the Youth council was one of 20 rural and regional youth advisory groups to be awarded a $1000 grant to kick-start a project to help create positive change in their local area.

"I’m pleased that Latrobe City Council Youth has been successful in receiving a Shape It! grant. They will use the seed funding for transport to and from the Morwell Skate Park launch to ensure accessibility for young people from remote areas including Yallourn North, Tyers, Glengarry, Toongabbie, Traralgon South, Yinnar and Boolarra." Mr Northe said.

Mr Northe said "The Coalition Government has provided funding to a number of skate parks across the electorate including Morwell, Yinnar and Glengarry.

"Skate and recreation parks bring benefits such as exercise, friendships and confidence to our youth."

Mr Northe said "The Shape It grants were part of the Victorian Coalition Government’s $3.2 million, five-year, funding package to help young people in rural and regional areas get involved in the life of their communities and make a positive difference.

"We know that when young people have a say in local matters that are of interest or concern to them, they are more likely to maintain ties with their community," Mr Northe said.

"The young people involved in this outstanding project have identified an important issue in their community and the $1,000 grant will help them develop local, youth-led solution."

The Shape It! grants program will help fund a range of projects across Victoria, including a cyber-safety campaign, youth mental health film festival and a social enterprise workshop.

Through its Youth Statement, the Coalition Government supports a number of programs that engage young people in education and employment, involve them in community decision making and that enable them to create music, art and enterprise.

Other programs include the Local Government Youth Inclusion Grants and the Change It Up program.

A total of 60 Shape It! grants will be available over three years. To find out more about Shape It! visit www.youthcentral.vic.gov.au/shapeit
