Council has responded to community needs by widening the scope of the maintenance contract according to council chief executive officer, Mr Glenn Patterson.

"Council is responsible for the routine maintenance of 1,726km of local roads," said Mr Patterson.

"New specifications introduced on July 1 includes wider pavements (flanking of road shoulders), a guard rail and guide post renewal and replacement program and tree clearance on collector roads which were all areas previously not included in the contract.

"These additional requirements as well as over half a million dollars worth of innovative works costing council just $190,000 will improve our rural road network," said Mr Patterson.

The innovation aspect of the contract includes the sealing of a number of roads, which will be undertaken this financial year.

Council is making an additional one off payment of $190,000 to get the works, valued at over half a million dollars, completed.

"Flanking road shoulders ceased at amalgamation and has been reintroduced as part of this contract which protects the road pavement and increases driver safety, this will begin after winter this year.

"Contractors have already begun tree clearance above collector roads and have undertaken additional training for this," said Mr Patterson

Council awarded the contract to Quality Roads at a council meeting 22 March 2006.
