By Kiri Hiriaki - 14th May 2002 - Back to News

In Short –

· Doveton Steelers too good on the day defeating an undermanned and very tired Wildcats 36/12.

· Good news on the horizon with three players selected for Victoria training squad where they travel to Adelaide in early June.

In Detail –

Gippsland Wildcats slumps after suffering a 36/12 loss to the strong Doveton Steelers at Betula Reserve, Doveton on Sunday.

The Wildcats struggling to maintain players due to injury fielded a squad with one on the bench. It was Wildcats third loss on the trot but Wildcats Coach is convinced players will emerge as the two home games in a row comes to the fore.

With a total of twelve sets of six, Wildcats had only completed four. The eighth minute of the opening saw Reno Sobari fend then swerve putting his body over the line beside the post to score the first try with David Noda kicking for conversion. Steelers wasted no time in replying with a massive full bench in tow to score a converted try. Within minutes after kick off, Steelers interchange proved worthy as they scored two converted tries consecutively taking the lead to 18/6. Wildcats suffered a blow where one player was involved in a collision leaving a thirteen-man squad. With only ten minutes left to half time, Wildcats coach/player Vincent Hiriaki carrying three tacklers from a busting run finally reached out to score a converted try. Half time score 18/12 Steelers way.

The second half showed similarities to last week’s match as the thirteen man squad defended their line gallantly with no bench giving Steelers all the room they needed. Taking light of the situation, Steelers scored at leisure against an undermanned and tired squad working against a Steelers seven-player bench interchange scoring eighteen points defeating Wildcats 36/18.

Tries scored: Reno Sobari (1); Vincent Hiriaki (1)

Conversion: David Noda (2)

Best on Ground: David Noda

Players Player: Jo Csik

Good news for Wildcats with the selection of three players for Victorian training squad. Reno Sobari, David Noda and Jo Csik travel to Waverley on Friday for training where a final squad will be selected within the next two weeks. The State squad heads to Adelaide in early June to compete in an inaugural tournament against other selected states. From this competition, an Australian Merit team will be selected.

This weekend takes Wildcats into a bye. The next game is at home on Sunday, 26th May at Harold Preston Park, Davidson Street, Traralgon at 2:00PM. For further information please contact 5175 0733.
