A feasibility plan to build a pavilion along the Churchill Art and Culture Pathway is being supported with $16,000 in Victorian Government funding announced today by Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe.

Mr Northe said the proposed Eel Hole Creek Pavilion would provide an inclusive and flexible space for informal gatherings by Churchill residents.

"Churchill was established in the 1960s to house the Latrobe Valley power industry workers and is now the home of a Monash University campus," Mr Northe said.

"Churchill is a diverse community and this project seeks to engage the community in a positive way and express the unique identity of the town.

"The Eel Hole Creek Pavilion Feasibility Plan project is a key component of the Gippsland Education Precinct’s strategy to bridge the gap between the Churchill township and the university to achieve the overall goal of transitioning the town from a power industry to a university town.

"The planning for the Eel Hole Creek Pavilion, including community engagement, is an essential step for the success of what is a complex project.

"The project is expected to deliver improved access to community services and facilities and improved community connectedness through participation and interaction."

Mr Northe said Victorian Government funding for the Eel Hole Creek Pavilion Feasibility Plan would be provided to Gippsland Education Precinct, which was contributing $5000 and Latrobe City $3000.

"The funding is being provided the $1 billion Regional Growth Fund’s Putting Locals First Program, which is supporting stronger and more sustainable regional communities by building their capacity to drive development in their region," Mr Northe said.

"Putting Locals First is a $100 million initiative that enables regional communities to devise and deliver service and infrastructure responses that reflect local priorities."

Pro Vice-Chancellor of Monash University's Gippsland, Professor Helen Bartlett, welcomed the announcement, and said the Pavilion would help strengthen the link between the campus and local community. "The Churchill Art and Culture Pathway project will providing a further means for the community to explore and engage with the campus, and we welcome the Minister's continued support of the Eel Hole Creek Pavilion Feasibility Plan. "In addition to improving access to the facilities and resources provided by Monash, the Pavilion will form an important part of helping share the history of not only the campus, but the town of Churchill itself."
