Phillip Island bike convoy to rev up MorwellHundreds of motorcycle riders will be passing through the Latrobe Valley tomorrow (Thursday 14 October) as part of the Ride to the GP – a Tribute to Barry Sheene. By Latrobe Shire Council - 14th October 2004 - Back to News The riders will be making a lunch-time stop between noon and 1pm at Kernot Hall Morwell where the combined Lions Clubs of Churchill and Morwell will serve a barbecue. The lunch-stop break is being facilitated by Latrobe City Council,
The convoy of riders will be winding its way from Bairnsdale to Phillip Island ahead of the GP on 15-17 October. The ride is in memory of the legendary GP racer who died of cancer in March last year.
Latrobe City’s Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley, said that Latrobe City was once again pleased to be welcoming the riders to the Latrobe Valley.
"The ride highlights an important safety issue on our roads, reminding motorists and bike riders alike that they need to remain alert about each other’s needs and treat one another with courtesy and respect on the road," Mr Buckley said.
"The formal lunch-time stop at Kernot Hall also allows riders to take time out and refresh after the ride from Bairnsdale. As we all know, taking a break during a long ride or drive is the best remedy for avoiding road fatigue.
"It’s also particularly pleasing to note that proceeds from the ride are going to the official charity of the 2004 Cinzano Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix – Cystic Fibrosis Victoria (CFV); so we are glad to be helping to facilitate the success of the ride," Mr Buckley said.
Leading the Ride is former 500cc racer and GP winner Daryl Beattie, plus V8 Supercar drivers Russell Ingall and Steven Richards.
A special guest rider this year will be Sheene’s close friend and former racing teammate Steve Parrish, from Britain. Another interesting "entry" in the Ride will be Terry "Tex" O’Grady and his canine pal, Cash, from Sydney.
Cash has clocked over 200,000km with Tex on his Aprilia and will be treated to a lap of the Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit at the end of the Ride. However, Tex will be going solo on the three days of the GP, as dogs are not permitted at the event.
Following the lunchtime stop at Morwell, the ride continues along the Strzelecki and Bass Highways, via Leongatha and Wonthaggi, to San Remo – the gateway to Phillip Island.
