Wonthaggi North Win Recycling CompetitionStudents from Wonthaggi North Primary were presented a cheque for $800 after winning the Bass Coast National Recycling Week collage competition. By Bass Coast - 18th November 2010 - Back to News Bass Coast Shire Council’s Infrastructure Director, Steven Piasente, said schools helped celebrate National Recycling Week (8-14 November) by creating collages using recycled materials.
"All Bass Coast schools were invited to participate in the collage competition," said Mr Piasente.
"Each entry used the slogan Do the right thing – Use the right bin."
Mr Piasente said all the entries from the school were creative and informative.
San Remo Primary won second prize and received a cheque for $500 and St Joseph’s Wonthaggi won third prize and a cheque for $200.
"The schools will spend the money on helping their school become more wastewise and sustainable.
"All other participating schools received a book pack from the Bunarong Environment Centre."
The aim of National Recycling Week is to increase recycling by improving understanding of what can be recycled.
"This reduces what we call ‘contamination’ in recycling bins," explained Mr Piasente.
"Contamination is when waste that isn’t recyclable is put into the recycling bin. If there is too much contamination in the bins it means it is not cost effective for recycling companies to sort and the whole recycling load goes to landfill.
"This is why it is so important that we all use the right bin for recyclables.
"If you are unsure if something is recyclable, check your waste calendar or you can log onto www.basscoast.vic.gov.au," said Mr Piasente.
