Curated by Kelly Boucher, Critters is a collection of fun and intriguing pieces from the Gallery’s permanent collection.

"We have chosen works that explore animals in art and the human relationship to the animal world. Designed for the enjoyment of children, the exhibition has been hung lower than normal so they can peer into the work and find the critters that have made Latrobe Regional Gallery their home," Ms Boucher explained.

"A comprehensive education kit has also been developed in association with this exhibition, enabling children to learn about the various animals, their habitat, relationships and character," Ms Boucher said.

"The artworks reveal the huge part animals play in our lives with their loyalty, friendship and protection. They decorate our lives with colour, song and chatter. We have used their bones as tools and their pelts for clothing and shelter, and if we take a moment to consider what powerful influence animals have on our lives, we realise just how much we love and need our furry, spiky, scaly, crawly, chirpy, buzzy friends," Ms Boucher added.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, said that he was delighted that the Gallery was encouraging young people to visit.

"By fostering a love of arts from an early age, we can ensure that the young people in our community have the opportunity to broaden their knowledge and experiences in life. This kind of exhibition lets children explore artistic themes and designs, whilst ensuring that the prime focus is on fun," Cr Middlemiss said.

Ms Boucher said that the Gallery was running two children’s art activities, to coincide with this special exhibition.

"On Saturday 29 November, from 1pm to 2.30pm we are holding a ‘Make your own Critter Badges’ workshop. Using a variety of materials children will create their own badge inspired by the animals that have made Latrobe Regional Gallery their home. The cost is $7 and the materials are provided.

"The following Saturday, 6 December, from 11.30am to 1pm, children will be able to make ‘Concertina Books’. Using drawing, stencils, collage and pop ups, participants will make their own hard covered storybook with the theme of Critters. The cost is $10, and again the materials are provided. Both workshops are for children aged seven and over," Ms Boucher concluded.

The Critters exhibition runs until 28 February 2004.

The Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Tuesday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am–4pm. The gallery is closed Mondays and Public Holidays. For further information about exhibitions at the gallery, please telephone 5128 5700.
