"The interim report into the 2002/2003 bushfires was presented to government this week and contains a number of key recommendations," Mr Ingram said.

"The first recommendation recognises the need for more fuel reduction burning and calls on the DSE to immediately review its processes.

"The use of local knowledge in fire management and suppression is also recognised by the Inquiry as an important factor and recommendations have been made to incorporate this knowledge into key decision making.

"Recommendations have also been made regarding rehabilitation following the fire, with the Inquiry urging government to initiate a review of the fencing policy for boundary and internal fences damaged as a result of the fire.

"I am pleased that the interim report raises many of the issues raised by local people affected by the fires and also raised in my own submission on behalf of Gippsland East residents.,

"I will now push for the State Government to undertake the recommendations raised by the Inquiry before the fire season commences."

Mr Ingram said copies of the interim report were available by contacting his electorate office in Bairnsdale or viewed on his website: www.craigingram.com
