Residents walk for safety in Bridle EstateResidents living on the Bridle Estate in Morwell, along with members of the local Neighbourhood Watch group undertook several walking safety assessments of their neighbourhood last Friday afternoon and evening. By Latrobe City Council - 31st May 2005 - Back to News Fifteen to twenty local people were joined by Member for Morwell, Brendan Jenkins MP, Latrobe City Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, Senior Sergeant Ricky Ross and Constable Dave Staple of Morwell Police along with Latrobe City’s Community Safety Manager, Henk Harberts.
Mr Harberts said that the walk around came about as a result of discussions at monthly Neighbourhood Watch meetings.
"Following the reporting of incidents in the Bridle Estate area, the Neighbourhood Watch group decided to arrange the walking assessments to identify a number of safety issues in the area," Mr Harberts explained.
The walking group met at the Bridle Rd shop, taking various routes around the residential area during the mid afternoon and at night. Each route took about one and a half hours to complete. The group recorded issues and marked maps of the area highlighting a variety of concerns. These safety issues included lighting, hazardous pathways and overhanging vegetation. Other items included broken glass, abandoned shopping trolleys and dangerous rubbish in various locations.
As a result of recent reports of antisocial behaviour the local police have committed to increasing their presence through a committed group of officers who will patrol and respond to resident concerns.
Police are encouraging residents to report all incidents to Morwell Police, telephone 5134 3255 and if urgent or immediate assistance is required, dial 000.
Police will also be door knocking residents to further gauge community safety issues and will be providing residents with a pamphlet giving advice and important contacts.
Cr Graeme Middlemiss praised the local residents for taking the initiative to create and maintain their own safe community.
"These walking safety assessments are a great way to bring a community together. With a sustained and organised campaign, local residents, together with the police, can ensure that the Bridle Estate is recognised as a safe and harmonious community," Cr Middlemiss concluded.
A follow up of the safety assessments will be undertaken via the Neighbourhood Watch group in two months time.
