Free Safety Sessions For Motorised Scooter Users

As Australia’s and Latrobe City’s population ages, encouraging mobility for both older people and people with a disability has been a priority for many different organisations within the wider community.

The independence that comes with transport is to be celebrated, but with mobility comes responsibility, both to other road users and to pedestrians. Latrobe City has organised several safety information sessions to address these safety issues including legal requirements, safety checks and choice of appliance.

Latrobe City’s Rural Access Project officer Bill Lawler said that the increased use of these vehicles has highlighted the importance of keeping the community safe for pedestrians and road users alike.

"It is important that people choosing to purchase one of these vehicles have thought about all the safety issues surrounding its use. Users of these scooters and wheelchairs may be riding on busy roads and should be well prepared for any eventuality, such as heavy traffic, pedestrians or even mechanical issues.

"These sessions will include presentations from Latrobe Community Health Service, Vision Australia and Victoria Police. Topics will include safety, choosing an appliance and legal requirements. Free safety checks to identify any safety issues, will also be available to participants who have a motorised scooter or electric wheelchair," Mr Lawler explained.

"Another important aspect of the sessions will be the ability to let people thinking about buying an appliance ‘try before they buy’. There will be a number of motorised scooters available for a trial run," Mr Lawler added.

"We would urge all interested parties to attend one of these sessions and prepare themselves for using this mode of transport," Mr Lawler concluded.
