The annual ‘NESTLÉ Write Around Australia’ competition was launched by Latrobe City Councillor Darrell White and local author Scot Gardiner at the Morwell Library on Thursday 11 March.

Library Co-ordinator, Noeline Grayden said that the nationwide competition was open to all year 5 and 6 students.

"To enter, the student has to write a 500 word story on any subject. The idea is to give young people the opportunity to express their thoughts, feelings and experiences through words," Ms Grayden explained.

"Once written, the story can be either submitted on the website at www.writearound.com.au, or posted to the address on the entry form on or before the competition closing date, Friday 14 May 2004. Entry forms are available at schools or libraries," Ms Grayden explained.

Cr White said that it was important that literacy and creative writing skills were encouraged in young people. "Competitions like this make story writing so much fun. I urge parents and teachers to encourage their children to put pen to paper and let their imaginations run wild," Cr White said.

Ms Grayden said that the ‘NESTLE Write Around Australia’ website is very useful, providing writing tips and displaying winning stories from previous years. "Teachers will also find lots of useful information on the website including some great tips on incorporating the competition into a fun creative writing lesson for their students that links to the curriculum," Ms Grayden said.

"Now in its tenth year, the competition has great prizes on offer, with over $200,000 worth of giveaways. There are collections of Australian books for the winning students and their school libraries, backpacks full of Nestlé goodies and even two laptop computers with software packages. This year there will also be an added prize for the 16 state and territory winners of a trip for themselves and their parents to attend the national presentation in Sydney," Ms Grayden said.

The Latrobe City Library Service will be playing a key role this year, working closely with the Department of Victorian Communities to coordinate the entries from students all over Gippsland.

NESTLÉ Write Around Australia is a Nestlé Good Life Program and was developed to encourage children to take part in creative writing and to utilise the resources of public libraries. The program is coordinated by the State Library of New South Wales and supported by the Department of Victorian Communities and public libraries around Australia.
