Bracks’ Broken Promise On Police

The Gippsland region is suffering because of a failed promise by the Bracks Government to get more police on the streets.

By Philip Davis - 25th February 2005 - Back to News

Liberal Member for Gippsland Province Philip Davis said concerns had been raised with him from a Neighbourhood Watch group in Sale that there was a lack of police in the area.

Mr Davis said he had also noted concerns from lmembers of the business and wider communities in the Yarram and Maffra areas about a lack of police presence.

"The Bracks Government is 450 police members short of the promise it made at the last election," Mr Davis said.

"Especially during the summer months, a full compliment of police is needed in Gippsland Province to cope with the influx of tourists and holiday makers to the region enjoying the warmer weather."

Mr Davis said the shortage of police in Sale was magnified when the 24 hour station is also called upon to support the Yarram region, which is almost an hour away.

The few Sale police rostered on at any time are also called on to support the Maffra, Rosedale, Briagolong stations which do not operate 24 hours.

"If an accident or situation occurs in Yarram when there is no police on duty in the town, those involved will wait at least an hour before police will arrive on the scene," Mr Davis said.

"Of course this wait will be significantly longer if police are already tied up at an incident at the other end of the Wellington shire."

Mr Davis said he supported the Police Association’s campaign to make the Bracks Government accountable for its broken promise on police numbers.

He said it was vital that the police shortage was rectified, as promised, within this term of government.
