Council decides not to purchase Commonwealth Games Fish

Baw Baw Shire Council decided at Wednesday’s meeting not to purchase the Gibraltan Pink Dentex Commonwealth Games fish after placing an expression of interest.

By Baw Baw Shire Council - 18th April 2006 - Back to News

Council sought advice and carefully considered the options and costs involved after strong community interest in the acquisition of a fish. Council CEO Mr Glenn Patterson said that a number of community, art groups and individuals had approached Council expressing an interest.

"We had some community interest in the acquisition of the Gibraltan fish. Most of the suggestions were to have it installed in a water environment somewhere in the shire," said Mr Patterson. "After seeking information from Arts Victoria and those involved with the Commonwealth Games, Council has decided not to proceed with the acquisition," said Mr Patterson.

Council has been advised that all fish were designed only to last the length of the Commonwealth Games and that extra design and maintenance work is required to locate them in an outdoor environment.

"There would have also been the costs involved in transport and installation of the artwork as well as ongoing maintenance issues," said Mr Patterson. "Councils are only being offered the fish part of the structure. We would have also needed to arrange extensive structural work to secure the fish.

"Council remains committed to community and public art," said Mr Patterson. "In this instance, Council does not see this proposal as viable."

The Pink Dentex is common in the waters of Gibraltar and valued as an eating fish. Dentex are a predatory species and are a prized catch for anglers.
