Wellington Shire Council last night recommended a planning amendment that would allow the Wellington Waters canal development proposal to be further developed and exhibited to the community.

"This is by no means final approval, but it is a recommendation that allows the developer the opportunity to prepare a final proposal and put this proposal out for public comment," said Cr Malcolm Hole, Mayor of Wellington Shire Council.

Cr Hole pointed out that Council can only recommend a planning change and that it is now up to the state government to make a decision on the amendment.

"Assuming the state government agrees, there will still be a long way to go in the approval process, including the opportunity for public comment and the need for an Environmental Effects Statement," said Cr Hole.

"Without doubt Council viewed this proposal as an exciting development that offers the Shire a lot of opportunity and benefits, but there are also issues that need to be discussed."

The proposal is also expected to boost development in surrounding towns and provide much needed boat facilities in the western end of the Gippsland Lakes.

Cr Hole said the resort and conference centre proposed in the development would be a major boon to tourism. A major wildlife park would particularly interest international visitors.

"By voting to seek the Ministerial approval for a planning amendment Council is effectively requiring the developers to publicly place all their cards on the table and answer any outstanding questions," said Cr Hole

"It also gives them a chance to demonstrate the benefits of the development."

Council noted the positive impact the proposal would have on employment and investment in the Shire.

"We particularly note the long term employment that will be created," said Cr Hole.

"The proposal is also largely self-contained in the provision of services and would not pose a major drain on Council resources."

"When this proposed development becomes a reality, it will have a significant beneficial result on our current decreasing population," said Cr Hole.
