Morwell Taxi Rank Open For BusinessThe new taxi rank in George Street, Morwell is operational after Latrobe City Council designed and developed a new 3-bay shelter By Latrobe City - 14th April 2011 - Back to News Latrobe City’s mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that the original taxi rank had limited shelter for both drivers and patrons and needed a facelift.
"A funding application was submitted in 2009/10 to the Victorian Taxi Directorate under the Taxi Rank Safety program and an amount of $176,100 inclusive of GST was provided for to the project.
"We consulted with representatives of Morwell Taxis, neighbouring commercial landowners and tenants to ensure that we accommodated all the key stakeholders’ requirements to develop the shelter," Cr White said.
Tanjil ward councillor, Bruce Lougheed said that construction meant changes to traffic flow in the Coles supermarket.
"During construction, with the cooperation of the supermarket management, separate entry and exit lanes into the Coles car park were created. This change in traffic patterns also relieved congestion at this location.
"The shelter is an all steel construction with lighting, safety glass in-fills and adequate access, clearance and circulation space for wheelchair users. Steel bollards and tactile tiles mark out the areas for pedestrians and taxis," Cr Lougheed explained.
Cr Lougheed added that the shelter was a definite improvement both in terms of the professional look and feel of the area and the health, safety and wellbeing of taxi users and drivers.
