Maffra Meeting to Discuss Street TreesThe future of the Johnson Street poplars in Maffra is to be the focus of a community meeting in Maffra to be held on Wednesday night, 23 November. By Wellington Shire - 14th November 2005 - Back to News "Regrettably the Johnson Street trees, like other older plantings in the Shire, are reaching the end of their life and will need to be replaced in the foreseeable future," said Mr Lyndon Webb, Chief Executive Officer of Wellington Shire Council.
"We want the Maffra community involved in the decision on when and how these trees should be replaced."
"This meeting will discuss community preferences for what types of trees should be replanted and how the plantings should develop," said Mr Webb.
"Council has no preferred option on these questions and wants community feedback."
The options for the street trees replacement include replacing trees individually as they age, replacing the trees in groups, or replacing all trees at once. Also open for discussion is the type of trees to replace the poplars.
"We want the meeting to discuss a range of options that are practical and sustainable," added Mr Tim Rowe, Manager Open Space with Wellington Shire Council.
"There is no point in planting trees that will not readily grow or fit in with the visual amenity of the town. It is important that we retain the character of Maffra in this exercise," said Mr Rowe.
The meeting will start at 7.00pm in the Maffra Memorial Hall. All members of the public are invited.
