Supporting changing lanes: Ingram

Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has called on Premier Steve Bracks to mend the bureaucratic debacle which is threatening the successful "Changing Lanes" project.

"The project was developed in October 2003 as a response to the issue of young people in the community who were not currently engaged in school, employment or constructive community activity," Mr Ingram said.

"It has been operating from a disused police workshop in Rupert Street, Bairnsdale. "Last year I questioned the Police Minister in Parliament rearding the government’s position regarding the land and was given assurances on the State Government’s support for the program.

Months later, the land is still earmarked for sale because of an in pass between the education department, the police department and the Victorian Government Property Group.

"In a letter to the Premier, I have outlined my support for the program which has been extremely successful at engaging young people who have struggled in the mainstream education system.

"The program has found work placement and apprenticeships, full time employment and further education and training.

"The government has an obligation to secure the Rupert Street site and show its full support for the program, Mr Ingram concluded.
