By Department of Sustainability and Environment - 17th August 2006 - Back to News Department of Sustainability and Environment spokesman Ian Miles, Acting Executive Director, Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, said the maps provide hunters and the general public with up-to-date, accurate information on where deer hunting is and isn’t permitted in Victoria.
Mr Miles said the deer hunting maps were developed over five years at a cost of about $240,000 following a review of safety associated with deer hunting on public land.
"Under the Deer Hunting Maps project, a total of 96 maps have been developed at a 1:100,000 scale using state-of-the-art technology," Mr Miles said. "This includes eight maps covering the Grampians region and 88 maps covering the majority of eastern Victoria.
"The Deer Hunting Maps will make a significant contribution to the ability of hunters to readily identify areas open to deer hunting and will reduce the demands on DSE Regional Staff and Parks Victoria to provide advice on where deer hunting may occur."
In contrast to paper-based maps that can become out of date quickly, the deer hunting maps are stored and available electronically, allowing easy amendment when required.
The maps may be downloaded and printed from the DSE website free of charge. They can be printed in colour on A3 paper.
Although aimed at providing accurate advice to the deer hunting community, the general public will also find the maps useful for identifying parks and reserves, freehold and leased/licensed land, Crown land, roads, tracks and waterways.
The maps can be found under the section ‘Where can I hunt?’ at www.dse.vic.gov.au/hunting.
For further information or advice about the Deer Hunting Maps project, please contact your local Department of Sustainability and Environment office or call the Customer Service centre on 136 186.
